Oggetto del contendere, gli oltre 400 gorilla di montagna che vivono nell\u2019habitat naturale , patrimonio universale dell\u2019UNESCO. Essi costituiscono circa la met\u00e0 della popolazione di gorilla del genere, esistenti nell\u2019intero mondo.<\/p><p id=\"u15071-4\">Solo recentemente, sono stati ben sei i rangers ed aiutanti uccisi dai bracconieri, ma anche dai guerriglieri, miliziani presenti nelle zone di confine con Uganda e Ruanda.<\/p><p id=\"u15071-6\">La situazione \u00e8 estremamente caotica: i bracconieri puntano ai gorilla, i guerriglieri si finanziano invece con il prezioso legname, con l\u2019estrazione dell\u2019oro, la produzione di carbone derivato da legna, metodo ben diffuso in tutto il mondo almeno sino al 1970.<\/p><p id=\"u15071-9\">Il Parco Virunga divenne famoso dopo il film \u201c<em>Gorilla nella nebbia<\/em>\u201d, che racconta la storia dell\u2019ambientalista Diane Fossey, uccisa dai bracconieri proprio a causa della sua opera di protezione dei gorilla.<\/p><p id=\"u15071-11\">Da anni, nel Parco vige il pericolo, il terrore ed una vera e propria strage di rangers, funzionari, addetti, guidatori\u00a0 di jeep: 175 gli assassinati negli ultimi venti anni.<\/p><p id=\"u15071-13\">\u00ab<em>Virunga ha perso uomini straordinariamente coraggiosi che erano profondamente impegnati a lavorare al servizio delle loro comunit\u00e0<\/em>\u00bb, ha detto Emmanuel De Merode, direttore del parco . Lui stesso venne ferito in un attentato due anni fa. \u00ab<em>\u00c8 inaccettabile che i ranger di Virunga continuino a pagare il prezzo pi\u00f9 alto in difesa del nostro patrimonio comune<\/em>\u00bb. Pur essendo in regola con le normative riguardanti la caccia grossa, gli stessi cacciatori d\u2019Europa ed America, vengono periodicamente invitati ad una compartecipazione conservativa delle specie in via di estinzione, invece di cimentarsi in battute di caccia finalizzate all&#8217;esibizione dei conseguenti trofei. Ben sarebbero gradite\u00a0 delle periodiche sospensive nella loro attivit\u00e0 venatoria, alleggerendo cos\u00ec una parte del lavoro di controllo da parte dei rangers, che si trovano in stato di pressione e confusione in territori estesi e critici come il Congo, il Ruanda e l\u2019Uganda, ma anche Sud Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, solo per citare alcune tra le pi\u00f9 ambite zone.
